Bernard Van Eeghem

Bernard Van Eeghem

°1953 lives and works in Brussels

Bernard studied architecture in Ghent and art history in Brussels.
While growing up in Bruges, the annual Blood Procession has left an indelible impression. It fed his desire, not so much for the pure spectacle, but for the integration of various branches in arts. A desire to create the ideal of an Gesamtkunstwerk, alone or with few people.
Bernard Van Eeghem writes lyrics, designs posters and settings, acts, sings and performs, makes theater and exhibitions. He taught contemporary art for Amaranth, was a tutor at the Lemmens Institute of Leuven and is currently a visiting lecturer at RITS.
During the theatre festival 2010 in Brussels he was asked to be one of the judges.
In 2011, he was the mentor for four young artists at Theater aan zee (Ostend).
Bernard Van Eeghem worked on many and diverse productions to only recently become and work independent into the theater. For the last couple of years Bernard made some remarkable plays with Catherine Graindorge, Manah Depauw, Katja Dreyer, Dolores Bouckaert and Nele Vereecken .
Especially Nil Nisi Bene Rari Nantes with Catherine Graindorge had a unanimous endorsement.
How Do You Like My Landscape with Manah Depauw was a great success and was played throughout Europe in 2010 and for the last time on the festival Transversales in Mexico City.
A small book –which title is kept a secret- was written for Campo, Ghent and will be launched November 9th. In late november, early december, four new solo performances will be staged at the Monkey Festival of RITS.
KAYAK will premiere december 18 in Beursschouwburg, Brussels. - La version française à partir du 14 février 2012 au Théâtre Les Tanneurs –
A retrospective of his conceptual art work opens January 13, 2012 also in Beursschouwburg and will run until March 8.

Why me? An overview of visual work by Bernard Van Eeghem. This summary is contained in a Hippodamian grid: horizontal you can find the axis with a variety of disciplines, vertical the axis of time, before birth until after death. Since there doesn’t seem to be work available from each period or even simply doesn’t exist, certain items will be completed in a fictitious and conceptually way....

2012

Short performances in which Bernard Van Eeghem tells us stories from his childhood in Bruges while he paints them simultaneously. He paints what he says and says what he paints. One day his father took him to see the bloodprocession in Bruges. Designed as a theater play, the great spectacle tells the story of the Passion of the Christ.

2011

For their new stage production Kayak-performers Bernard Van Eeghem, Catherine Graindorge and Katja Dreyer team up as a threesome for the first time. Kayak is their first collaborative research on the notion of falling and failing. The reckless kayak sea-travel by Andrew McAuley, the artistic conception of falling by Dutch artist Bas Jan Ader and Philippe...

In DUCKS, actress Nele Vereecken and performer Bernard Van Eeghem investigate the possibilities of a traditional theatre text. Two old men sit on a bench in a parc near the lake. They look at the ducks on the water. Then they start imagining how the duck society would be like. And in the meanwhile they talk to each other about human society and...

With How do you like my landscape Manah Depauw and Bernard Van Eeghem use sharp imagination to redefine the place of the human body within our society, which is still prey to a puritanical eye and political correctness. By means of slight manipulation - disconcerning by its simplicity   - Depauw and Van Eeghem remove the human body from its...
